Mineral resources remain critical for industrial development

Industrial minerals remain one of the quietest but most consequential inputs to global economic activity. Demand for iron ore, manganese, bauxite, chromite and specialty minerals continued to track steady industrial output through the first quarter of 2026, with the additional, increasingly visible pull of the clean-energy transition layering on top.

Steel and aluminium consumption — the two most direct read-throughs for ore demand — remained firm, supported by infrastructure capex and resilient construction activity across major Asian economies. Manganese and chromite demand mirrored the pattern, while specialty inputs used in batteries and grid equipment continued to see structural growth.

Indian producers, particularly those with port-adjacent operations on the eastern seaboard, are well positioned to participate in both demand streams. Beneficiation capacity additions over the past three years have improved grade consistency, a critical factor in winning long-term industrial contracts.

Operating standards continue to evolve. Buyers, lenders and regulators increasingly expect mining operations to demonstrate measurable progress on safety, water management, progressive rehabilitation and community development. Producers that treat these expectations as operational discipline — rather than as a marketing exercise — are also the ones reporting the most predictable costs.

Looking ahead, the dual demand engine of conventional industry and the energy transition is likely to keep industrial minerals firmly relevant well beyond the current cycle. For Indian producers with the right grades, locations and operating standards, the medium-term outlook remains constructive.
